Burnt Coil: Diagnosis and Fixes
A sudden burnt taste on your vape almost always comes down to a coil that isn't getting enough e-liquid, a wattage set too high, or a coil that's simply worn out. This diagnostic guide walks you through pinpointing the cause in a few steps and fixing it right away.
Understanding the dry hit: what's actually happening
Every vape coil works on the same principle: a heating element (wire or mesh) is wrapped in absorbent cotton that holds the e-liquid. When the cotton isn't saturated enough at the moment you fire, the heat scorches the dry cotton instead of vaporizing liquid. That's what's known as a dry hit.
The sensation is instantly recognizable: harsh, acrid taste, rough smoke, an irritated throat. In bad cases the cotton is partly burnt and the coil is damaged for good. Knowing the cause saves you from killing coils for nothing.
Cause 1: not enough priming
This is the most common cause on a brand-new coil. If you fire a coil that hasn't had time to soak up e-liquid, you get an instant dry hit.
Fix
- 1Install the coil in the atomizer and fill the tank.
- 2Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes without firing (15 minutes for thick-wick coils or high-density mesh).
- 3Optional but recommended: drip 3 to 5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the coil's wicking ports before installing it.
- 4Take 3 to 5 gentle pulls without pressing the fire button (dry pulls) to draw liquid into the cotton.
- 5Start at the lowest recommended wattage and work your way up gradually.
Cause 2: wattage set too high
Every coil has a recommended wattage range, printed on the packaging or stamped on the coil body. Going past that range heats the cotton faster than it can re-wick.
Fix
- •Check the range marked on the coil (e.g. 40-60W) and stay in the lower half to begin with.
- •Bump the wattage up in steps of 5W max, taking a few puffs between each step.
- •If you want more vapor, go up to the maximum recommended wattage only, never beyond it.
Cause 3: e-liquid too high in VG
Vegetable glycerin (VG) is the thick, viscous part of e-liquid. A high VG ratio (70VG, 80VG, Max VG) produces lots of vapor but soaks into the cotton more slowly, especially in coils with small wicking ports.
Fix
- •Make sure the coil is suited to your VG ratio. Sub-ohm coils with large wicking windows are built for high VG; MTL coils or those with small ports need a 50VG/50PG up to 60VG max.
- •Switch to a more balanced ratio (50/50 or 60VG/40PG) if you're running a pod device or an MTL tank.
- •Wait longer between puffs to let the cotton re-wick.
Cause 4: tank nearly empty or cotton run dry
When the e-liquid level drops below the coil's wicking ports, the cotton stops getting fed. Keep firing in that state and you'll burn the cotton.
Fix
- •Never let the tank drop below a third of its capacity before topping up.
- •If you've vaped on an empty tank, refill and wait 5 minutes before pulling on it again.
- •Some devices have a low-level cutoff: if a hit suddenly tastes off, check the level before looking at any other cause.
Cause 5: chain vaping (puffing too fast back-to-back)
Firing puff after puff with no pause doesn't give the cotton time to re-wick between hits. Even with a full tank and the right wattage, chain vaping slowly dries the cotton out.
Fix
- •Wait at least 15 to 20 seconds between puffs.
- •If you feel a bit of heat or the flavor starts to change, set the device down for 30 seconds.
- •Mesh coils usually re-wick faster than wire coils, but none of them are immune to this.
Cause 6: e-liquid loaded with sweeteners
Sweet e-liquids (creamy flavors, desserts, some very intense fruits) contain sucralose or rich flavorings that caramelize onto the coil with every puff. That residue builds up and eventually burns, giving a burnt taste even on a properly primed coil.
Fix
- •The coil is gunked up: cleaning rarely works (the residue is baked into the cotton). You're better off replacing it.
- •Move to a less sweet e-liquid for your next coil: fresh flavors (menthol, aqueous, plain tobacco) gunk up far less.
- •With sweet liquids, expect a shorter coil life (1 to 2 weeks instead of 2 to 3 weeks).
- •Some pressed-cotton coils handle sweeteners better than open-mesh coils: ask your vape shop for advice.
Cause 7: coil at the end of its life
Even with perfect use, a coil only lasts so long. Over time the heating wire oxidizes, the cotton clogs up, and performance drops off. The burnt taste shows up even with a proper liquid level and the right wattage.
Signs it's time to replace the coil
- •A burnt taste that won't go away despite a full tank and the right wattage.
- •Muted or flat flavor, thinner vapor.
- •Visible black discoloration through the tank windows.
- •E-liquid that turns dark very quickly after you fill up.
A typical lifespan is 1 to 3 weeks depending on use (how often you vape, wattage, type of e-liquid). There's no reliable cleaning method that brings an end-of-life coil back.
Quick diagnosis checklist
- 1Is the tank filled above the wicking ports? If not: refill and wait.
- 2Is the coil brand-new? If yes: check the priming (5 to 15 min of soak time).
- 3Is the wattage within the coil's recommended range? If not: turn it down.
- 4Are you chaining puffs back-to-back? If yes: take a break of at least 20 seconds.
- 5Is the e-liquid very sweet or very thick? If yes: lower the wattage or switch to a thinner liquid.
- 6Does the burnt taste stick around across several refills? If so: replace the coil.

Can you save a coil that's burnt out?+
If the cotton is partly burnt (intense taste, very dark color), the coil is usually beyond saving. Rinsing with hot water can dissolve surface-level sweet residue, but the charred cotton stays inside the wire and the taste comes back fast. The most effective fix is to replace the coil.
Why does my new coil burn on the very first puff?+
Priming is nearly always the cause. Even with a full tank, the cotton doesn't saturate instantly. Wait 10 minutes after filling the tank, and take a few gentle pulls without pressing the fire button to speed up how the cotton soaks up the liquid.
How long does a coil last on average?+
Anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks of normal daily use, depending on the wattage you run and the type of e-liquid. Sweet liquids or high wattages cut the lifespan significantly. Fresh or plain e-liquids at a moderate wattage get you closer to the 3-week mark.
Does the coil type (mesh or wire) affect the risk of a dry hit?+
Mesh coils usually re-wick more evenly thanks to their large contact surface, which lowers the risk of a dry hit in normal use. On the flip side, they also burn through e-liquid faster and are more sensitive to chain vaping. Classic wire coils are more forgiving but deliver less flavor.
My coil only burns with certain e-liquids: why?+
E-liquids heavy in sweeteners (sucralose, ethyl maltol) caramelize onto the coil at high temperature. With some very dense flavor blends, that residue builds up after a few days and burns on every puff. It's a chemical limit of the cotton, not a defect in the coil itself.
